Frequently Asked Questions
Periodontal Disease ( also known as gum disease), is a bacterial Infection that damages gum tissue and destroys the bone that supports the teeth. If left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to sore bleeding gums, loose teeth, and tooth loss. Scientific evidence shows a direct link between periodontal disease and a variety of other major health issues such as stroke, heart attack, miscarriage, and diabetes.
Symptoms of periodontal disease may include any or all of the following: gums that bleed easily, sore swollen gums, loose teeth and/or tooth loss, receding gums, and chronic bad breath.
Possible causes of gum recession include: periodontal disease, improper brushing technique, orthodontic treatment, genetic predisposition, grinding teeth or poor occlusion, crooked or misaligned teeth, and lifestyle (tobacco use, oral piercings, etc.)
When gum recession progresses, the tooth’s root structure is exposed, and the first line of defense against bacterial penetration is lost. This can lead to tooth decay, sensitivity to hot and cold, and other problems along the gum line. Decay along the gum line is the primary reason for tooth loss as we age. Treating gum recession protects against tooth sensitivity and discomfort, root decay, damage, and tooth loss.
Dental Implants offer incomparable benefits over other methods of tooth replacement and have the look, feel, and function of natural teeth. Implants form a strong foundation for tooth replacement, keep the jawbone healthy and are the most comfortable and permanent solution to replace missing teeth. When properly placed and cared for, dental implants can last a lifetime.
In contrast, removable appliances can be uncomfortable and will need to be replaced every few years. Replacing missing teeth with a bridge involves grinding down other healthy teeth in order to provide an anchor for the bridge. Cleaning under a bridge can be a challenge.
LANAP (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure) is a minimally invasive alternative to traditional gum surgery. It is the only scientifically proven laser therapy to result in periodontal regeneration, new bone growth, and gum tissue attachment lost due to moderate to advanced periodontal disease.
Benefits include; no incision or stitches, minimal bleeding and inflammation, less discomfort and shorter recovery time, reduced risk of infection, and new bone growth.
